Does anyone have anything bad to say about firefox 3, or tips to do with it. We are still on 2, and don't want to upgrade to 3 if there are known annoyances. Ta in advance.

Tip of the Day - well it made me chuckle
    From www.mumsnet.com:

"Mother-in-law annoying you with useless advice? Mentally append the following phrase onto her comment: 'and look how messed up my family are'. You'll no longer feel the need to bludgeon her with a teaspoon. (whomovedmychocolate)"

I think that can extend to anyone, not just MiLs, too.

    Oh good grief...
    From: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7103566.stm

"Confidential details of 15 million child benefit recipients are on computer discs lost by HM Revenue and Customs, the BBC understands.

The chairman of the organisation, Paul Gray, has resigned. "

15 million? That's everyone who gets it, basically.

Grr. What is the point of being so careful with what one posts online, credit card security, shredding documents, etc etc, if government depts and large corporations, who are meant to be trustworthy and have secure systems and procedures, are forever making mistakes of this magnitude?(It was visas last week, I think). It's allegedly names, addresses and bank accounts. Wouldn't surprise me if it also contains DOBs for not only the claimant but the children too. A fraudster's paradise either way.

    Finds wall.

    Bangs head against wall.

Pain from banging head against wall takes the edge off pain from dodgy shoulder.

    Too many acronyms
Could someone come and write about GABA, and the VOR, for me please, as my brain has melted and I can't get the information that went INTO my brain (several times) out of it again in any coherent way. Pretty please?

I am going to visit a lab tomorrow. I think this is exciting.

    meme from wellinghall
nearest book; pg 123; sentences 6+

Ha, you'll wish you hadn't asked. Although my book only goes to p103 so I just started again from the beginning.

"That said, if you enjoy a challenge, purchasing offers the chance to make your mark in an industry that's really on the up." [yeah right] "Purchasing cuts across all sectors and for many organisations their biggest cost (...) is the cost of goods and services bought from third parties" [well, yeah, obviously, doh!]

Sorry, have lost the will to live, no more, no more.

    Memeage
It has been a while since a meme appealled to me (and likewise making any kind of journal posting), but I'm fairly chuffed with the results of this one. Also, I'll say hello to all of my friends who frequent this place. Many of you I have seen or spoken to lately, a special hello to those I have not. I hope everyone is well.

    A very useful website
    www.saynoto0870.com

Gives geographic alternatives to many non-geographical numbers (such as 0870, 0845) that companies run, such as those for my bank, utility company, etc.

Most people's landline telephone services charge a lot less per minute than so- called "local" (0845) and "national" (0870) rate calls do. (Dunno about mobiles - you can tell how much I don't use mine! - but similar probably applies there too). It becomes even more important if you pay a flat fee for all your geographical landline calls, as 0845 and 0870 are not included in this. You can search by number or by company, and add your own.

They also sometimes have alternative freephone numbers for advertised 0845/0870 ones as well, numbers that will avoid automated systems, etc etc!

Reckon this is going to save me a small fortune (and time, and frustration).

easiest job application I've ever done...
    Dear Didiusjulianus,

"Thank you for your interest in employment opportunities with X ... We wanted
to take this opportunity to let you know that your application has been received,
and also let you know about how the selection process works...."

I didn't apply to them. Wouldn't it be funny if I got offered an interview?

A number of charities including YWCA, Terrence Higgins Trust, NSPCC, Unicef etc. are
campaigning to have Personal, Social and Health education (PSHE) made compulsory in schools,
as many young people are missing out on health, emotional, relationship and other topics that
they need to prepare them properly for adult life. I completely agree. You can take action by visiting

And finally, a recommendation, this is where I like to buy my "smellies" from:
http://www.yves-rocher.co.uk (male, female & kids, also available in several other european countries and the USA - the babies' perfumes are a bit odd, and decidedly French, though).

    Little greetings card gems
    We have received:

A blank one (although it came with a lovely handwritten letter so we know who it is from and forgive them)

One that says who it is to but not who it is from.

One to two people whom we do not know - from a likeness in one of the names, obviously a case of envelope-swapping

And a pretty e-card from some very dear friends which, among other nice things, said "Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and all the best for 2005!" Lol!

Don't worry though, we love to receive them all. Very thoughtful.

    It's that time of year...
So, I hope everyone on my flist (and the wider readership, if there is one) enjoys the festivities of the next week or so, or blissful r&r, or both, and that you arrive safely wherever you may be going (and return home safe again afterwards). Looking forward to hearing all the stories later.

And if it doesn't go so well (the turkey doesn't defrost in time, a powercut halts the watching of the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Show, you lose at charades for the 17th year running, or your mother-in-law is *just* too much this time (always a possibility with mine))...feel free to find a place of refuge in my little journal and rant to your heart's content.

    xx

    Hello Flist
    A few points, for now

    1. My email is only work sporadically, if you have anything to say to me that is time-dependent, please call me (at least if you don't get a reply). Otherwise, things are coming through albeit a few days late in some cases!

    2. I'm well overdue for a "what have I been doing lately" posting - the answer is, quite a lot, but I've not been in the mood to write it down. Now I am, but I'm writing an assignment - will get round to it eventually.

    3. Happy Solstice, Yule, Saturnalia, Christmas, New Year or whatever you are celebrating - and greetings even if you aren't celebrating anything in particular.
